Branding …braaaanding, brannnndiiiiiing, so much branding, everywhere on social media, blogging communities, nowhere is safe, everyone and their landlord is talkin’ about branding. It seems once you delve into any type of entrepreneurial business endeavor, there is always talk of branding. What is it, where do you get it, do you even need it?
That depends on how well you want to be represented by images, colors, and a reputation, anything that holds your place and speaks for you when you are unable to. You don’t want someone who knows half of what you do to speak to a potential client for you. Strong branding holds your place and can communicate exactly what your business is about when you can’t speak. When you aren’t around, what do you want your aesthetic placeholder to say about your business or product?
But what else in our business can say more for us than what colors we chose, or what our logo looks like? How about how we present ourselves, the owners and face of our product or service?
Continuity and consistency communicate reliability, responsibility, and most importantly, trust.
When we show up when we say we will, every time, when we bring what we promised, every time, when we deliver exactly what we promised to deliver, without fail, every time, we become trusted. We continually receive trust from our clients and customers, because they know exactly what we are, how we do it, and when we do it, they know precisely what to expect, time and time again. And when people can rely on you, they return to you, they even trust other people with you, you gain a reputation for being a professional, and you become a real business.
Those things are possible with proper, professional branding. Branding is the continued theme and style across your company or business. It reaches all aspects of business, specifically social media, packaging, content, products, service, and hides in creative little places we sometimes don’t think to look, such as in our reputation and history. Our brand identity is what we and our business are, what we have shown others, whether it be successes or failures, continuity or inconsistency, our continued behaviors and appearances become who we are, whether we mean for it to or not.
Actions Speak Louder Than Words
A brand is more than pretty colors. Colors are important, and can even influence certain decisions and becoming suggestive to clients, playing a part in the psychology of customers. But another vital aspect to branding is consistency and continuity. That means placing certain experiences of the same style in the same places over and over again for your target market and clients to experience. Whether it be product quality, customer service, packaging, atmosphere, logos, social media presence, etc. Wherever your reputation shows up, is an opportunity to practice fluidity and consistency. And the deeper the consistency in our presence, whether online, in person, throughout social media , or packaging and products, the stronger our reputation becomes, and the more reliable our business becomes.
Showing up late, sending out sub-par work, having smudgy, blurry labels, being a jerk on social media, bad press, typos in email, and crappy products are just a few things that can happen, alone, even one time that can have a negative effect on our presence and tarnish our brand image overall. Being consistent with quality, and not allowing room for those mistakes or undesirable qualities are going to be the strongest tools you have control over to build a quality brand and successful business future.
Because what we do everywhere becomes what other people see us as, they do not see the hard work, dedication, time away from family, agonizing frustration with building our brand, the hidden failures, the small successes, the big wins, the little achievements, our clients and potential clients see only what we bring to the table, what we show up with. Our brand should be clean and complete, ready to set down on the table and present, not a work-in-progress.
Showing up prepared, and being and giving what others expect can make or break a new business. It is vital to a businesses future to harness a continuous image and presence, to be thorough with that image and follow through with it from start to finish. Showing up fully dressed, complete, whole, ready to kick ass is the most valuable start you can make.
A great brand can take time, trial and error, and learning and growing to become as strong as you desire. But persistence, pushing through the tough stuff, and always being your very, very, best, no excuses, no shortcuts, is the optimal path to becoming the quality business…BRAND… you have always wanted to be.
